Start early: big-tech internships open in the fall
Many large tech companies open summer internship applications in August through October, about 9 to 10 months before the start date, and review them as they arrive. Applying in the first weeks matters more than polishing one application for a month.
- August to October: most big-tech and finance summer internships open
- Fall to winter: interviews, online assessments and offers
- Winter to spring: many startups and smaller companies post their roles
- Track every application and its status in one place in ProfVault
CPT vs OPT for F-1 students, in short
Two ways F-1 students can work in the U.S. Applications often ask which one you will use.
CPT (Curricular Practical Training)
- Work during your studies, such as a summer or co-op internship
- Authorized by your school's Designated School Official (DSO), not USCIS
- Must be part of your curriculum, often for course credit, and tied to a specific employer and dates
OPT (Optional Practical Training)
- Up to 12 months of work related to your field, usually after you graduate
- STEM graduates may qualify for a 24-month STEM OPT extension
- Needs an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) from USCIS before you start work
"Will you now or in the future require visa sponsorship?"
For most F-1 students this is yes. CPT and OPT are temporary, so working for an employer long term usually means a visa such as H-1B. Set the answer once in your profile and ProfVault answers it the same way everywhere.
This is a summary, not legal advice. Rules change and depend on your situation; check with your school's DSO or international student office.
Your resume, transcript and cover letter in one vault
Upload them once. The extension attaches your default resume and cover letter for you; your transcript and other documents are a click away whenever a form asks for one.
- Resumes, cover letters, transcripts, offer letters and certificates
- AI sorts each upload into categories and reads key dates
- Email reminders 30 and 7 days before a document such as a passport, visa or EAD expires
- Private to your account. Delete any document, or your data, at any time
Questions from internship seekers
When should I start applying for summer internships?
Earlier than most students expect. Many large tech and finance companies open summer internship applications in August through October, roughly 9 to 10 months before the internship starts, and some roles fill on a rolling basis. Smaller companies and startups often post later, through winter and spring.
What does ProfVault fill on an internship application?
The Chrome extension fills your contact details, education (school, degree, major, GPA, expected graduation date and enrollment status), relevant coursework, work history, links, and work-authorization and sponsorship questions from your saved profile. It also attaches your default resume and default cover letter to the upload fields.
Does it upload my transcript too?
No. The extension attaches your default resume and default cover letter. Keep your transcript, offer letters and other documents in your ProfVault vault so you can download and upload one in seconds when an application asks for it.
I'm an F-1 student. How should I answer "Will you now or in the future require sponsorship?"
For most F-1 students the honest answer is yes: CPT and OPT let you work for a limited time, but staying with an employer long term usually needs a visa such as H-1B. You set this answer once in your profile and ProfVault gives the same answer on every application. This is not legal advice; check with your school's DSO.
Is auto-fill really free?
Yes. Auto-fill in the extension is free and unlimited, with no credit card. Paid plans add AI-written answers and AI credits for tailored resumes and cover letters.
Which job sites does it work on?
Workday, Greenhouse, Lever, iCIMS, Taleo, SmartRecruiters, SuccessFactors, Ashby and 80+ other job application sites.
